10 Year Guarantee

+

Garages 10 Years Timber Guarantee
Garages 10 Years Timber Guarantee II

10 Year Guarantee

The floor bearers that offer support to this garage are pressure treated and therefore are guaranteed against rot and insect infestation for 10 years. Protecting your timber thoroughly, you won't need to re-treat the timber for at least ten years or worry about little critters causing havoc.

Slow grown spruce

+

Garages Slow Grown Spruce
Garages Slow Grown Spruce II

Slow Grown Spruce

Unlike our competitors, we only use high-quality spruce timber in our garden garages rather than the cheaper alternative pine or mixed timber. Why do we use slow-grown spruce rather than the much cheaper alternatives?

Spruce is considered more stable as it expands and contracts less than pine. This stability means that the spruce walls of our garden buildings minimise gaps appearing as the timber changes along with the weather.  We responsibly source all our timber, where it grows slowly in the cold northern regions. We all know the old adage of counting the rings to see how old a tree is, well our timber grows slower, and takes longer to get to size meaning it has more rings in it. This means it has a tighter grain, and each ring helps prevent cracks and shakes appearing in the densely packed timber.

Our garden buildings really are built to last therefore we use only the highest quality, slow-grown spruce.  Spruce is much more resilient to warps and splits compared to its cheaper alternative pine. Being a whitewood, it doesn’t discolour anywhere near as much as pine so it is also much more aesthetically pleasing for a log garage. Considered more stable, less knotty and resinous than pine, spruce will also produce a lot less sap. It is also less dense meaning it is not as susceptible to mould and rot.

Many manufacturers use a mix of timber saving them money. They will buy the lowest cost timber and then mix these up during production, often using finger joints. Ending up with a wooden garage, where the walls are a mix of pine (redwood) and spruce (whitewood). Not only does the timber garage then look comical, with stripy walls of different timbers, but this just shows a lack of pride about the finished product.

4mm toughened glass

+

Garages 4MM Toughened Glass
Garages 4MM Toughened Glass Styrene

Real Glass, Not Plastic

Unlike most garden building companies that fit their products with either plastic glazing such as styrene, acrylic and Perspex or shed-spec glass alternatives such as 3mm horticultural glass we don’t. We break the mould by only using 4mm toughened glass, as we feel this is the most durable and secure in comparison to the rest – trust us, we’ve tested it.

During our rigorous testing, we found that toughened glass was harder to scratch, harder to break and safer to clear up when our brick eventual broke through. It’s clear to see that our 4mm toughened glass is the best choice for any outdoor building.

Our 28mm garages come with single glazing as standard, which consists of a single pane of 4mm toughened glass, able to repel stray footballs. Whereas our 45mm garages come with 24mm double glazing included at no extra cost. Our 24mm double glazed sealed unit comprises of two, 4mm single glazed panes of toughened glass on either side of an aluminium spacer bar, designed to absorb any excess moisture within the sealed unit.

All our sealed units conform to BS EN 1279 standards. This standard covers the requirements for insulating glass units, including thermal and sound insulation. The sealed units are tested to show that they will not suffer from any form of condensation within the unit.

Quite simply we don’t believe in compromising on quality!

Multipoint Window Locking

+

Multipoint Window Locking Garages

Multipoint Window Locking

Just like our doors, we use mushroom headed espagnolettes which pull the window tightly into the draft seals attached to the frame. We also supply a solid handle and key that allows you to lock the window whilst you’re away. Most garden buiding companies only supply a multi-purpose stay arm opener for both locking and keeping the window open.

Avoid sagging roof

+

Garages Avoid Sagging Roof
Garages Avoid Sagging Roof II

Avoid Sagging Roof

Our heavy-duty 140mm or 210mm high by 45mm wide supporting roof beams prevent unsightly sagging.

Adjustable Storm Braces

+

Garages Adjustable Storm Braces

Adjustable Storm Braces

Our storm braces are not only supplied as standard but tie the garage together. Unlike other log garages on the market ours are adjustable, this allows for the natural movement of the garage, which helps prevent gaps appearing between wall logs as the logs settle and move.

3 Gate Hinges

+

Garages 3 Gate Hinges
Garages 3 Gate Hinges Single Hinge

Strap Hinges

We supply you with six robust strap hinges to hang your barn doors with. These strap hinges are not only screwed in to place but bolted through both the door and the framework, making it harder for intruders to remove the barn doors and enter the garage.

Plastic Vents

+

Garages Plastic Vents
Garages Plastic Vents II

Plastic Vents

We have included ventilation as part of our garage kit to help prevent condensation build up within the building. We use two pairs of plastic base plates, one round and one square. The external round vents have chamfers to help direct water away from the hole, the inner square vents have an integral fly screen to prevent insects from entering through the vent. The pair of vents allows a flow of air through your garage to help keep out musty smells.

No Glued together Offcuts

+

Carports No Glued Together Offcuts
Garages No Glued Together Offcuts II

No Glued Together Offcuts

We only use full lengths of timber in our garden buildings - we don't glue separate offcut pieces together with finger joints. Not only are they stronger, but they look much better too.

Pressure Treated Bearers

+

Pressure Treated Bearers - Trent 3.0x5.5 Lo-Roof Garage

Pressure Treated Bearers

All of our garden buildings include pressure treated bearers as standard. As they are exposed to the damp, cold ground. This treatment will prevent them from rot, decay and insect infestation for up to 10 years.

Due to this costly but effective process we can offer our customers a genuine 10-year guarantee against rot and insect infestation on the bearers. We only suggest that you apply a good quality water repellent to prolong the longevity of the timber.

Shockingly still some of our competitors offer untreated bearers to keep their costs down. Who wants to have to annually deconstruct and re-treat the bearers each year!

All our Pressure Treated timber is for User Class 3

Avoid Planning Permission

+

Avoid Planning Permission - Trent 3.0x5.5 Lo-Roof Garage

Avoid Planning Permission

This building is under 2.5m high. Why does this matter? Well, under permitted development rights buildings under 2.5m high can be placed as close as you want to a boundary (eg. a fence line) without planning permission. Buildings that are over 2.5m high, however, need to be placed over 2m away from any boundary (eg. a fence line), which means that with taller buildings you end up with a lot of space behind them. If you want to find out more about permitted development rights see our planning guide.

Tall Walkthrough Height

+

Tall walkthrough Height - Trent 3.0x5.5 Lo-Roof Garage

Industry Leading Walkthrough Height

We were the first on the market to provide tall walkthrough height to the UK market. There's no need to 'duck' on the way in through our quality single side door. With a tall walkthrough height of 6'2" (1.88m) you’re free to move in and out of your cabin concussion free. There are other companies who have tried to copy us but have had to include the doorframe as part of the walkthrough height!

Wide Opening Windows

+

Wide Opening Windows Garages

Wide Opening Windows

Our garage workshops feature key-lockable outward opening windows, so you don’t lose internal space, allowing you to accommodate work benches underneath the window. Our windows have been designed to include draft seals that prevent wind and rain from entering your garage. You may think it’s over the top, we think it’s just standard.

Stainless Steel Friction Stays

+

Stainless Steel Friction Stays Garages

Stainless Steel Friction Stays

You’ve probably at some point left the window open and its suddenly started to rain. Usually, this would be an issue for normal window hinges as they could rust. However, there’s no need to panic as our expertly joined windows come with our 5-star stainless steel friction stays, typically found on the uPVC windows in your home. This also eliminates the needs for the typically found stay arm openers, commonly used on timber garages.

Internally Beaded Windows

+

Internally Beaded Windows Garages

Internally Beaded Windows

Both our side door and windows are fitted with internal beading used to secure the glazing in place. This beading style is typically found in uPVC windows and is a proven method of security. However, there are still some companies that externally bead their windows. Allowing intruders to remove the glazing from the outside of your garden house and gain access.

Heavy Duty Roof Purlins

+

Heavy Duty Roof Purlins Trent Lo-Roof 3.0x5.5

Heavy Duty Roof Purlins

Purlins are the large timbers used for structural support in buildings. We use very thick, heavy duty roof purlins to support your garage.  At 140mm x 45mm they are amongst the thickest purlins available on the UK market. Competitors will often use thinner purlins to keep their costs down which means their roofs will not be as strong as ours. Using thinner purlins risks the roof collapsing or sagging during extreme weather – and that’s the last thing anyone wants!

High Internal Eaves

+

High Internal Eaves Trent Lo-Roof 3.0x5.5

High Internal Eaves

Our internal eaves are typically higher than other comparable products on the market, reaching 7 feet 2 inches, and the roof boards are higher still. There's plenty of room inside for you to walk around without bumping your head and plenty of space for storage also.

4-Point Locking System

+

4 Point Locking System For Secure Wooden Garage

Domestic Style Locking System

Your security is of the upmost importance to us.  You have invested your precious time, thought and money into creating your perfect Cabin, therefore we want to ensure your valuables are as safe as they would be inside your own home.

Our doors feature an industry leading domestic standard 4-point locking system consisting of mushroom headed espagnolettes which slide in opposite directions as well as a 6-pin Euro cylinder, which has been tested to BSEN 1303:2005 classification. Making it difficult for intruders to break in and steal your precious belongings.

Most companies will use a cheap and simple 2-point locking system. For us it’s a no brainer – why would you compromise your security when we offer the best on the market! Beware garages with cheap, ill-fitting windows that are susceptible to the weather and cannot be properly secured.

Have a question?

How high is this Garage?

+
It is 2.51m (8' 2") high

How thick are the walls?

+
45mm Tongue & Groove

What timber is this Garage made from?

+
We use slow-grown Spruce timber for the main structure of the Garage. Spruce is less porous than Pine and so less likely to shrink, warp or split.

Do you offer any guarantees or warranties on this product?

+
We offer a genuine 10-year guarantee against rot and insect infestation on pressure treated timber.

Do I need planning permission?

+
Due to the unique design of a Dunster House product, in the vast majority of cases our garden buildings can be installed without the need for planning permission.

However, there are a few other factors to consider:

As all properties are different in size, shape and style we can only advise based on how we have designed our products, not on your property.

When to consider planning permission:

  • - If the garden building exceeds over 2.5m tall - the majority of Dunster House buildings do not exceed this.
  • - If you intend on putting an outbuilding in front of the main elevation of your property (as it was originally built or as it was on 1st July 1948) will require Planning Permission.
  • - If you live in a listed or graded building
  • - If you live in a designated area such as areas of outstanding natural beauty, national parks, world heritage sites and conservation areas.
  • - If there is a possibility that over 50% of your garden would be taken up by outbuildings.

Click here for more information on Garden Building Planning Permission in the UK.

Still not sure?

If you are still in doubt, we highly recommend getting in contact with your local authority before making a final purchase.

What base do I need for this Garage?

+
We recommend a flat, level concrete base at least 100mm bigger on each side. e.g. A 4m by 3m building would have a base of 4.2m by 3.2m See more details here.

Do you install?

+
Unfortunately, we do not offer installation currently. All our garden buildings have been designed on the basis that any competent DIY customer will have no problem installing a product themselves in a short amount of time.

You do not have to be an expert at DIY to build a Dunster House garden building, as we do provide you with comprehensive pictorial instructions. Also, if you prefer video tutorials, we do have a selection of videos on YouTube which will support you in building your product.

We totally understand that DIY is not for everyone and it can be very overwhelming to start building your own garden product. Therefore, you may want to consider getting in touch with a local carpenter or handyman to install it for you.

If you do take on the challenge to put your garden building together, we are always here to help. Do not hesitate to contact us at any stage of putting your product together and we can provide you with all the assistance you may need. Thank you for taking the time to read about our terms and advice during this period. We hope you can enjoy your Dunster House garden product for many years to come.

To ensure the very best quality, we only use slow-grown White Spruce Timber, which is harvested in cold climates to ensure solid, dense log rings. This gives the wood superior strength and longevity, and also a much more consistent colour than the likes of Pine.

Despite the care we take in selecting the very best Timber available, it’s not like predictable brick or cold steel, this natural material has characteristics and quirks unique to every log.

Because our timber logs once fed water and nutrients back and forth from its roots to its leaves, its very nature is to be porous and swell up when it gets wet. Any wooden product will do this throughout its life, but there are a few things you can do to help limit this movement.

These include:

1. A great design!

  • Don’t worry, we’ve got this one covered. We’re experts when it comes to all things timber, so we have designed our products from the ground up with its natural properties in mind.

2. Water Repellent Treatment.

  • How you customise and decorate your product is up to you, however we would recommend that you use an appropriate water repellent treatment. This really helps minimise the amount of moisture that the timber can absorb. Therefore minimising the risk of any major movement.
  • (Please note: water repellent treatment is not the same as pressure treatment, which protects against rot and insect infestation, and which we guarantee for 10 Years!)
  • On pressure-treated timbers, you may notice some subtle striation marks. These marks sometimes appear during the drying process of timbers. Fear not! In time, the marks will begin to fade as the sun starts to lighten the wood.

Striaton

3. Ventilation.

  • Keeping your timber building ventilated is no less important than keeping your house well ventilated. This is especially true if you plan to cover up your floorboards with something (double check with an expert, that the material is suitable to do so), as moisture can become trapped between layers of non-breathable materials and build-up, leading to floors becoming rotten.

4. Regular Seasonal Maintenance.

  • Whether you opt to build your product yourself, don’t be afraid to tighten the odd bolt here and there. Your product is a life improving investment, so it’s only right to give it some love and care from time to time. Make sure that it’s properly treated before the rainy months, and you make adjustments to doors and window frames, when needed.

Natural Timber Properties

After building your timber product, this natural construction will begin to ‘settle’. This means that you will likely see some natural timber imperfections appear. These types of natural imperfections can include:

  • Cracks

Cracks On Wood

  • Splits

Splits On Timber Held With A Green Rounded Safety Cap

  • Shakes

Shakes On Wood Panel

  • Warping / Twisting

Warped wood panels, twisted Wood panels

  • Expansion and Contraction

Please be aware that, as these are natural timber properties they are not considered as defects under our Terms & Conditions (for more information, check out our Ts&Cs here). However, in most cases, these imperfections will not impact the integrity or function of your timber product, and/or can easily be rectified. For advice on how to rectify these and for more support, please get in touch with our Customer Services Team on cs@dunsterhouse.co.uk.
