Garden Office Myths
We have become aware of Companies selling
uninsulated wall Garden Offices and proposing that due to the thickness of the timber they use, for example
45mm or
70mm thick, that insulation is not important. If you believe this then we recommend our
Log Cabin Basic Office Range as these have Roof and Floor Insulation,
45mm thick walls and are excellent value for money when compared to expensive other
uninsulated wall Office ranges. Basic in name but anything but in nature they protect against upwards heat loss with their thick roof insulation.
However, if you want a significantly greater level of heat retention, then please consider this. The walls of a
45mm wooden office give a U-Value of approximately
1.9 W/m
²K; However, the walls of our
130mm Cabin Garden Office are significantly better at retaining heat, which gives
0.3 W/m
²K due to their Foil-Backed Polyurethane core (incidentally NASA have used Polyurethane to insulate Rocket Fuel Tanks!). These offices are made with
28mm walls sandwiching a
70mm Polyurethane cavity. Moving to our
160mm wall Garden Offices,
45mm inner and outer walls sandwiching the same
70mm Polyurethane core only improves the U-Value to
0.27 W/m
²K (but makes a stronger wall in case you're wondering why we offer both). So as you can see the majority of the insulation comes from the Polyurethane.
We've also noticed a competitor proposing that an untreated wall is somehow better than a Pressure Treated one, and again, if you believe this, our
Log Cabin Garden Office Range will save you
£1000's and give you this finish (but like the competitor you will have to treat it with a treatment
colour of your choice). If, on the other hand, you'd prefer a low maintenance structure, then Pressure Treatment is what you need. This involves putting timber into a very large
pressurised container (we put in pre-cut timber so that the treatment goes into the ends as well, we don't cut after treatment). This is full of a treatment called
Tanalith 'E'.
Tthe container is sealed and
pressurised, forcing the treatment deep into the timber. This process ensures a significant resistance to rot and insect infestation in a way no paint on treatment can come close to. (You can even paint over it if you wish!).
We hope that gives you some factual insight into the world of Garden Offices and the choices available to you. Please don't be fooled that an
uninsulated office will give as much heat retention as a Polyurethane insulated one because it won't even come close. If you have any questions please give us a call on

Our Timber Products
All our products are completely unique to Dunster House and are manufactured by our dedicated factories.
Log Cabins and other garden products are typically made from 2 types of softwood – Redwood (Pine) or Whitewood (Spruce). We make our products using whitewood, as, despite being more expensive it is considered to be more stable against warps and splits than redwood.
Our timber is responsibly sourced from cold northern regions where the timber grows slowly. We all know the old adage of counting the rings to see how old a tree is. Well our timber grows slower, takes longer to get to size and so has more rings in it. This means it is tighter grained, as each ring helps prevent cracks and shakes appearing in the timber.
Spruce is a whitewood, which is generally considered more stable as it expands and contracts less than Pine, which a lot of our competition use. If you live in a timber frame house the timber framing is highly likely to be spruce as the construction industry has long understood the superiority of spruce over pine in their requirement for a stable, strong softwood as they don't want service calls from cracked plasterwork as the timber moves behind it.

Why Buy From Dunster House?
All our products are unique to Dunster House
Our belief that price-wise customers don’t simply want low budget options has been Dunster House’s prevailing recipe for success. Our product names are now registered trademarks to prevent imitations and protect our good reputation from being damaged by inferior products being marketed as if they are the same. Our family manufactures a wide range of attractive, expert quality garden products at low prices. Beware imitations!!!
Open 7 days a week and have our own show sites
Customers are always welcome to come and view our products for themselves. There is a huge difference in quality between various manufacturers. A show site offers you the chance to see and experience exactly what you’ll be getting. Our showrooms ensure that you have an opportunity to see, touch and get a feel for our products before purchase. We are not an internet-only company; a lot of internet companies do not have show sites or a registered address beyond a PO Box. Buying on the internet certainly has its advantages but ensure a company is prepared to back this service up by spending time answering questions and showing you around. Even if you decide to forego this part, it’s reassuring to know there’s no veil between what’s being offered on the internet and its reality.

We prototype our products in one of our factories first
Our customers are not guinea pigs. Some smaller companies make to order, meaning that your order is potentially the first one of that design they have ever built.
We are the manufacturers
We are the experts and we give the best value. We are unique in this regard. The family that owns Dunster House also owns the manufacturers. Our directors and employees frequently visit the manufacturers to ensure the good quality of our products.
