Slow Grown Spruce Timber Log Cabins

All of our garden lodges are made from high quality slow grown spruce timber, rather than a mixed timber or cheaper material like pine. Mixing timbers will be less aesthetically pleasing on the eye, as the cabin walls will be a combination of colours. Spruce timber is whitewood giving the overall finished product a  crisp, neat and uniformed look.

Slow grown spruce has properties far more superior than alternate materials. It is a lot more resilient to warps and splits, there are far less knots and it doesn’t produce as much sap. Slow grown spruce is also known to be more dense, durable and stable as it expands and contracts less than pine. The stability of the spruce timber minimises the number of gaps that will appear throughout all four seasons. 

Apex Roof Log Cabins

An apex roof log cabin is a traditional style of cabin that has a roof similar to a house. There are two slopes, which both meet in the middle, therefore making the middle the highest point of the building. Add floor and roof insulation as an optional extra. The 25mm thick polyisocyanurate is easily held in place beneath the floor boards, while the roof insulation attaches on top of the roof boards.

Alternatively, our WarmaLog insulated log cabins are an innovative concept with a 62mm sandwich of timber and polyisocyanurate. Their U-Value is equivalent to 110mm wall thickness. An ideal option for any weather, keeping the room warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Fully insulated sandwich panels and double glazed windows that come as standard will contribute to keeping the room cosy for you and your loved ones to enjoy all year round.

Our insulation options are quick and easy to install into your log cabin and help promote heat retention, thus saving you on your heating bills. We supply polyisocyanurate insulation because it is a far better insulator than rockwool or polystyrene.

In preparation for the arrival of the garden log cabin it is vital to prepare a foundation that the garden building is going to sit on. There are many different types of bases that the log cabin sits on. Depending on the style you want to achieve, this may determine what base is best to opt for. 

Choose a location for the log cabin that is not going to cause the garden or log cabin any harm in the long run. Placing a log cabin under trees will cause leaves and debris to get stuck within the roof and guttering system requiring regular maintenance. Therefore, an open air space will be perfect. Whether the cabin is going to sit at the centre of the garden or be tucked away snugly in the corner, it is important to adhere to planning permission rules and building regulations. 

When creating a base, the key thing to remember is that it must be flat, level and square. 

The easiest, most reliable base is a concrete foundation, as this can assure stability, and longevity. Paving slabs is an option that will provide the log cabin with a sturdy, secure base but bring an element of design to the garden. Decking is a common option amongst many, particularly when looking to add a seating area outside the garden room.

Log Cabin Roof Protection 

Protect the roof of the log cabin with super felt or bitumen shingles. Shielding the roof boards from the natural elements is incredibly vital, therefore felting the roof is key when installing the log cabin. No matter whether the log cabin has a pent, apex or chalet style roof it still requires protection.

Applying felt to the log cabin roof is one of the key elements, however one of the easiest things to do. Undertaking this task once the log cabin is erect is quick, easy and can be done efficiently.

The other option is shingles which comes from fibre based bitumen.

Maintain Your Log Cabin

We recommend choosing the right treatment for your garden cabin and that you treat it as soon as it’s built. At Dunster House, we offer a variety of wood preservatives that are solvent and water-based, and come in a variety of different colours. In addition to selecting the best log cabin treatment, it’s also important that you re-apply treatment when required. This will depend on the log cabin preservative you have chosen.

Furthermore, creating an environment that aids moisture control is an important element in maintaining your garden log cabin. Make sure measures are in place for the roof, floor, foundations and surrounding drainage to help shake off extra moisture and prevent rot, fungal and insect infestations. 

At Dunster House we use pressure treated floor bearers to protect the lowest part of the building. We use a large pressure treatment tank that forces the treatment deep into the timber at high pressure. Due to this effective process, we offer our customers a genuine 10 year guarantee against rot and insect infestation on the bearers.

Don’t forget, your spruce log cabin is made of timber, a natural product that will contract and expand according to the UK’s unpredictable weather. Once the cabin is erected, there will be a period of “settling” as the wood reacts and adjusts to the surrounding climate. Splits and cracks may occur over time but that shouldn’t compromise the quality and integrity of your garden building. 

The use of interlocking tongue and groove timber in our log cabins help with the strength and stability of the walls, as well as the natural expansion and contraction of the timber.

Log Cabin Wall Thickness

Our log cabins are available in a range of wall thicknesses; 28mm, 45mm and 62mm (Insulated) which is equivalent to 110mm U-Value. 

U-Values provide a measure of heat loss found within building materials used for walls, floors and roofs. If you intend to use your cabin all-year-round, rather than just seasonally, you should choose as thick a wall as possible to maximise the insulation.  

To allow you to compare options we quote the U-Values of the walls below.

Our 28mm walls are almost 50% bigger than a 19mm wall and are ideal for larger buildings for seasonal use. (U-Value 2.59 w/m2 K) 

Our 45mm walls contain over 60% more wood than a 28mm wall and are ideal for use all-year-round. (U-Value 1.93 w/m2 k) 

Our 62mm walls are a triple tongue and groove sandwich of timber and polyisocyanurate insulation. This achieves a U-Value equivalent to 110mm walls. (U-Value 0.59w/m2 K)

Planning Permission for Garden Buildings

You may have found exactly what you’re looking for, a log cabin to your exact taste and measurements. That’s great! However, before placing an order for your wooden garden building, it’s important to familiarise yourself with any planning permissions or building regulations that may apply in your area.

The good news is that most of our garden buildings don’t typically require planning permission. This is due to our unique designs that utilise the maximum width and height available to us.

Although we have a wide range of garden cabins under 2.5m, some exceptions may still apply. Hence it’s vital that you check with local authorities whether you’ll need planning permission or not. For more information on planning permission and building regulations, take a look at the official government website.

DIY Log Cabins 

All our garden buildings are designed for self-assembly, and come with very detailed pictorial instructions, alongside video tutorials that you can view online. We include all the fixings needed for assembly at no extra cost to you, as we just want to ensure ease when constructing your log cabin. 

When building a Dunster House Log Cabin you don’t need to worry. The notched logs interlock easily into one another, and our windows all come pre-assembled. This means you don’t have to put them together, you just simply need to slot them in. If you wish to add a little character to your windows, they do come with stylish georgian bars, however this is completely optional on whether you want to install them or not. 

Erecting a log cabin, you don’t need to be an expert at DIY. However, if you feel slightly apprehensive to do the construction, a local carpenter or handyman will be able to install it for you.
