Planning Your Garden Building

Building regulations can be complicated but are normally defined by use, size, and location of the building. So depending upon what you want to use your garden building for, you may not need to worry about them.

The general criteria for whether or not you need Building Regulations:

  • The building is not for sleeping accommodation.
  • If the building has an internal floor space larger than 15 square metres, it must be sited at least 1m away from any boundary.
  • If the building has an internal floor space larger than 30 square metres, it does not comply with building regulations, unless you intend to use it for an exempted use. This includes buildings that people do not usually enter, or agricultural purposes.

Please check our Building Regulations section for full details.
