At Dunster House, we believe a knot in the wood is a story, not a flaw. Our garden buildings are crafted from genuine, natural Spruce timber, and to ensure they are as durable as they are beautiful, we use a Professional Hot Melt Thermal Inlay system, also known as Hot Melt.
The material is a High-Strength Polyamide, unlike basic wood fillers or waxes that can shrink and crack, we use a pro-grade Polyamide (high-strength nylon). This is a versatile, high-performance polymer known for its incredible durability. Because it remains flexible, it bonds deeply to the wood fibres and “moves” naturally with the timber during seasonal changes. This creates a permanent, structural seal that cheap fillers simply cannot match.
The benefits include weatherproofing and sustainability. While knots are a natural feature of real wood, they can occasionally loosen. Our Hot Melt process serves two vital purposes:
- Superior Protection: It seals the knot hole, preventing driving rain and moisture from entering the timber, which significantly improves the weather performance of your building.
- Environmental Commitment: This process allows for “Full-Tree Utilisation.” By refining the timber rather than discarding it, we reduce unnecessary waste and respect the natural resource, supporting our commitment to honest, responsible craftsmanship.
Our Hot Melt is available in two tones – Pine and Walnut. Both have been carefully selected to complement both untreated and pressure-treated timber. As wood is a natural product, the grain and colour vary, meaning the filler provides a harmonised rather than identical match. This adds to the authentic charm of the building, and once you apply your own paint or stain, these areas blend in even further. We have already professionally sealed them to provide a superior base for your first coat of treatment.
This is a factory-grade finish applied by our craftsmen during the quality-control stage before your order is packed. Because it requires specialist high-temperature equipment to ensure a structural bond, it is not available as a DIY kit. This ensures your building arrives at your door fully prepped, protected, and built to last.
