Looking at purchasing a garden building, and can’t decide between a pent roof or an apex roof? To ensure that you make the right choice we are going to run you through both roof styles that can feature on log cabins, garages, sheds and summer houses.
Visually you can see what the main difference is between an apex and a pent roof below:

What is an Apex Roof?
An apex roof has two slopes, which both meet in the middle – the highest point of the roof. Having the two slopes makes it easy for water to run straight off the roof, meaning less chance of water damage.
What is a Pent roof?
A pent roof has one sloping side only. The front of the timber building is most commonly the side with the highest point of the pent roof and it then descends to the back.
How to Choose?
Location
You want to consider where you are going to be putting your garden building, because if you are locating it less than 2m’s away from the boundary, the overall height must not exceed 2.5m. Luckily, the majority of our garden buildings are less than 2.5m. If you’d like to know more about planning permission check out our blog or our planning permission quiz to guide you through.
Pent roof garden rooms are a lot more compact, and sit better where there are a lot of trees, against a wall or fence. As pent roof buildings tuck away easier, you will gain a bit more space in the garden, especially if it is on the smaller side.
With an apex roof, you need a space where the building can stand tall and proud. As this roof style offers height, it isn’t as easy to hide away.
Storage or Entertainment?
When deciding on your roof style, you will also want to consider what you will be using your garden building for. If you are looking at a log cabin to host your garden parties in or to gather your friends and family, an apex roof might be better as it will give you more height. However, pent or modern-style roof log cabins are popular as they can suit a more modern garden design.
If you are deciding on a roof style for your shed, a pent-roof shed may be suitable for a storage shed. Pent roof sheds can fit neatly into an awkward corner at the side of your house, or tuck away easily.
Personal Preference
After considering all these factors, you want to ask yourself what style you prefer – modern or traditional? The chalet-style apex roof is definitely a lot more classic, whereas the pent roof is more modern and very stylish.
