Vanguard with uPVC INSULATED Log Cabin Overview

Extend your living space at a fraction of the cost of adding a conservatory or extension with our Vanguard Insulated Log Cabin. Our Vanguard Insulated Log Cabin has all the incredible features of our Log Cabin range.

We have gone one step further and built this large cabin with our innovative Warmalogs. These 62mm sandwiched logs consist of spruce and polyisocyanurate, the same insulator used by NASA, giving you a cabin with the same thermal efficiency as a cabin with walls 140mm thick.

Key Features

  • 50mm thick insulated floor. Strong and sturdy
  • Secure, industry leading multi-point locking systems
  • Designed with the DIYer in mind for quicker install
  • Adjustable storm braces included. Protect your cabin
  • Slow grown Spruce, not cheap Pine. Built to last!
  • 10 Year guarantee on pressure treated floor bearers
  • Choose from white or grey uPVC windows and doors

Enjoy long evenings in your cabin before closing the large French Doors, double glazed windows, and curl up in your new space to enjoy a movie. Rest safe in the knowledge that your equipment is safe thanks to our 4mm toughened glass and four-point locking system.

Other than the Vanguards pressure-treated bearers; this Log Cabin is delivered untreated allowing you to treat it exactly how you like it. For the extra WOW factor, why not opt for the stylish anthracite grey effect windows and doors? Alternatively, you can opt for the more subtle white uPVC?

We can significantly undercut competitors offering uPVC options as we are a large DIY window and door manufacturer. We do not buy windows and doors from another company therefore we do not need to markup our prices and transfer the cost to our customers. Providing you with great value!

Additional Information

To ensure the very best quality, we only use slow-grown White Spruce Timber, which is harvested in cold climates to ensure solid, dense log rings. This gives the wood superior strength and longevity, and also a much more consistent colour than the likes of Pine.

Despite the care we take in selecting the very best Timber available, it’s not like predictable brick or cold steel, this natural material has characteristics and quirks unique to every log.

Because our timber logs once fed water and nutrients back and forth from its roots to its leaves, its very nature is to be porous and swell up when it gets wet. Any wooden product will do this throughout its life, but there are a few things you can do to help limit this movement.

These include:

1. A great design!

  • Don’t worry, we’ve got this one covered. We’re experts when it comes to all things timber, so we have designed our products from the ground up with its natural properties in mind.

2. Water Repellent Treatment.

  • How you customise and decorate your product is up to you, however we would recommend that you use an appropriate water repellent treatment. This really helps minimise the amount of moisture that the timber can absorb. Therefore minimising the risk of any major movement.
  • (Please note: water repellent treatment is not the same as pressure treatment, which protects against rot and insect infestation, and which we guarantee for 10 Years!)
  • On pressure-treated timbers, you may notice some subtle striation marks. These marks sometimes appear during the drying process of timbers. Fear not! In time, the marks will begin to fade as the sun starts to lighten the wood.

Timber with Striation marks

3. Ventilation.

  • Keeping your timber building ventilated is no less important than keeping your house well ventilated. This is especially true if you plan to cover up your floorboards with something (double check with an expert, that the material is suitable to do so), as moisture can become trapped between layers of non-breathable materials and build-up, leading to floors becoming rotten.

4. Regular Seasonal Maintenance.

  • Whether you opt to build your product yourself, don’t be afraid to tighten the odd bolt here and there. Your product is a life improving investment, so it’s only right to give it some love and care from time to time. Make sure that it’s properly treated before the rainy months, and you make adjustments to doors and window frames, when needed.

Natural Timber Properties

After building your timber product, this natural construction will begin to ‘settle’. This means that you will likely see some natural timber imperfections appear. These types of natural imperfections can include:

Cracked climbing frame timbers

Split Timbers

Timber Shakes

Warping / Twisting

Expansion and Contraction

Please be aware that, as these are natural timber properties they are not considered as defects under our Terms & Conditions (for more information, check out our Terms and Conditions. However, in most cases, these imperfections will not impact the integrity or function of your timber product, and/or can easily be rectified. For advice on how to rectify these and for more support, please get in touch with our Customer Services Team on [email protected].

It is the small details that matter…

When choosing a cabin, it is important to think about security. In addition to our industry-leading multi-point locking systems, we also ensure that our window and door hinges are concealed.

Unlike some competitors, you cannot simply use a screwdriver to remove a window or door. We ensure that screws are concealed.

Why? Because your security matters!

Dunster House Secure Concealed Hinges and Screws

Competitor Unsecure Hinges and Screws

We provide full-length floorboards NOT Half cut boards commonly supplied by competitors.

Did you know? Unlike some competitors, our flooring is not charged at an extra cost AND our full-length boards make DIY install easier and look far nicer!

Dunster House Full Length Floorboards Included as Standard

Competitor Half Cut Floorboards

All our garden buildings have been designed on the basis that any competent DIY customer should have no problem installing a product themselves in a short amount of time. You do not have to be an expert at DIY to build a Dunster House garden building, as we do provide you with comprehensive pictorial instructions. We totally understand that DIY is not for everyone therefore, you may want to consider getting in touch with a local carpenter or handyman to install it for you. But before you do, check out our construction video and decide for yourself!

Purlins are the large timbers used for structural support in buildings. We use very thick, heavy duty roof purlins to support your garden building.  At 140mm x 45mm they are amongst the thickest purlins available on the UK market. Competitors will often use thinner purlins to keep their costs down which means their roofs will not be as strong as ours. Using thinner purlins risks the roof collapsing or sagging during extreme weather – and that’s the last thing anyone wants!

Heavy Duty Roof Purlins

Unlike our competitors, we only use high-quality spruce timber on our wooden products rather than cheap pine or mixed timber. Why do we use slow grown spruce rather than the much cheaper knotty pine alternatives?

Spruce is considered more stable as it expands and contracts less than pine. This stability means that the spruce timbers in our garden buildings minimise splits from appearing as the timber changes along with the weather.  We responsibly source all our timber, where it grows slowly in the cold northern regions. We all know the old adage of counting the rings to see how old a tree is, well our timber grows slower and takes longer to get to size meaning it has more rings in it. This means it has a tighter grain, and each ring helps prevent cracks and shakes from appearing in the densely packed timber.

Our wooden garden buildings and climbing frames really are built to last therefore we use only the highest quality, slow-grown spruce.  Spruce is much more resilient to warps and splits compared to its cheaper alternative pine. Being a whitewood, it doesn’t discolour anywhere near as much as pine so it is also much more aesthetically pleasing for a garden structure. Considered more stable, less knotty and resinous than pine, spruce will also produce a lot less sap. It is also less dense meaning it is not as susceptible to mould and rot.

Security is important for your garden building, to ensure all your belongings and any valuable equipment is safe. Our uPVC doors feature an industry leading 12-point locking system. Meanwhile, the windows feature multipoint locks with secure key locking handles.

Our 12-point locking consists of four shoot bolts, three mushroom headed espagnolettes, three hook bolts, a locking latch and a 6-pin euro cylinder. The windows feature a multi-point locking system consisting of mushroom-headed espagnolettes which move in opposite directions into metal keeps. Why would you risk your possessions by using less?

So, if you are comparing garden buildings, don’t forget that our uPVC windows and doors offer additional security benefits!

Insutry Leading Multipoint Locking on Windows & Doors Fully Insulated Secure windows

There is nothing more annoying than being in the middle of building something and finding that you don’t have the right fixings to continue. We include all of the screws, nails and fixings that you will need to put your garden building together – not many of our competitors are that thoughtful. This eliminates the need to worry about the type of screws or the length of nails you might need to get started – it’ll all be with your delivery.

Fixings Included

This log cabin is supplied with domestic standard uPVC window and door frames, just like you would find in a residential property. They come in a colour choice of either White or Anthracite Grey Wood Effect, so you can tie them in with your home, or customise your garden building. We’ve been manufacturing uPVC windows and doors for over 30 years – so we really know our stuff!

The fully glazed French doors provide easy access to your log cabin, make the most of natural light, and can be thrown open to let in plenty of fresh air. They also feature trickle vents to aid ventilation and avoid moisture building up when doors and windows are closed.

upvc windows grey upvc windows White

To control natural expansion and contraction in the timber, the Warmalog features steel straps on the inside and outside of the cabin known as storm braces, secured by screws and bolts, these braces are adjusted to spread the timber’s natural movement equally across a much larger area, thus avoiding the worst effects of localised expansion and contraction within the wood.

Log Cabin Storm Brace

We only use full lengths of engineered precision cut and routed tongue and groove timber in our log cabins. These logs go through a process of being planed, leaving you with a smooth finish. We believe that using full lengths of planed timber gives you a more aesthetically pleasing and stronger product.

Other companies are happy to provide you with rough offcuts, glued and finger jointed together, creating a weakened cabin and off-putting appearance.

62mm Log Cabins Insulation

We never compromise on quality which is why the insulation that we use in our Warmalog cabins is of the highest specification. It’s called polyisocyanurate and it is one of the best insulators available, it’s so effective that even NASA has used it to insulate the external fuel tanks of their space shuttles!

Polyisocyanurate is a great material because not only is it lightweight and versatile, its high thermal conductivity makes it sought after. Competitors insulation might be cheaper, but they may use Rockwool or polystyrene, which are inferior materials. Polyisocyanurate is said to be 50% more efficient than Polystyrene and up to 100% more efficient that Rockwool.

It’s not just the walls that are insulated in a Warmalog cabin! We also provide the same kind of insulation for the roof (60mm thick) and for the floor (50mm thick). As well as this coverage, the Warmalog cabin comes with double glazing as standard.

All of this heat-retaining technology ensures that any Warmalog cabin can achieve a U-value of 0.69. The U-value assesses the rate of heat loss / gain through all the thicknesses of the combined elements that make up a building component such as a wall, floor or roof. Simply put the higher the U-Value the worse the product performs. Our Warmalogs U-Value of 0.69 is considered to be very low, meaning you’ll save a fortune on heating bills compared to Polystyrene or Rockwool insulated cabins!

Fully Insulated Log Cabins Insulated log Cabin Logs

Our cabin logs are designed to interlock with a chamfered finish to ensure a snug fit. The chamfered notch system is designed to prevent damp or wind penetration. Our interlocking logs make for speedy installation and minimal need for tools. Our garden buildings have been designed on the basis that any competent DIY customer will have no problem installing a product themselves in a short amount of time.

Unlike some competitors, we provide interlocking precision-engineered chamfered logs. Keeping your log cabin watertight and free from unsightly draft-producing gaps.

Precision Engineered Interlocking Chamfered Logs

Add a flyscreen to the windows of your garden building, so you can benefit from letting the fresh air in while keeping those pesky insects out, without restricting visibility. An insect screen will allow you to still view out of the window to survey your surroundings, watch nature and look out at the beauty of your garden.

flyroom screens for porches

As the effects of global warming take place, the Earth is changing, with reports suggesting an expected increase in the number of insects around the world. An increase in temperatures over the coming years will speed up the growth rate of some insects. This includes the domestic housefly, which could see a rapid rise in its population. Order your flyscreens now to protect you for the future.

Keeps out insects

It’s always nice to be able to throw open the windows of your garden room to enjoy a warm summer breeze or cooling air. With the addition of a flyscreen mesh, you can enjoy the warm weather without worrying about unwanted insects getting in. Keep those flying insects from buzzing around as you try to work in your garden office or relax in your summer house.

Ventilation and comfort

Ventilation and circulation of fresh air is also important for the wellbeing of you and your garden building and helps to maintain a relaxed and comfortable environment inside. Flyscreens for windows give effective protection so you don’t have the annoyance of flies and other creepy crawlies.

Durable materials

The fly mesh is made of strong and water-resistant materials to last. Easy to fit

It is provided as a simple ready to install screen to fit the size of your garden room or log cabin window and fixes to the window frame. Easy to follow instructions will be provided alongside your order.

Easy to use

The roller flyscreen is easy to operate, with a handle to pull it down when the window is open, and a small clip will keep the screen in place. When not in use, the retractable flyscreen design allows it to be discreetly hidden away.

The bearers of your garden building are pressure treated to help protect your garden building from the ground up. We provide a 10 year guarantee against rot and insect infestation for all pressure treated timbers.

Unlike some competition, we can offer a genuine 10-year guarantee against wood-eating fungal and insect infestation on pressure-treated timber.

All our Pressure Treated timber is for Use Class 3

10 Year Guarantee on Pressure Treated Timber

All of our garden buildings have pressure-treated floor bearers as standard. This treatment prevents the timber bearers from rotting for up to 10 years and causing your garden building to sink. Pressure treatment forces the wood preservative into the timber rather than simply dip treating (essentially just covering the exterior) like many companies still do. Who wants to have to annually deconstruct and re-treat the bearers each year!

Due to this costly but effective process, we can offer our customers a genuine 10-year guarantee against rot and insect infestation on the bearers.  We do however recommend applying a good quality water repellent to the timber to prolong the longevity of the timber. Shockingly many of our competitors still offer untreated bearers to keep their costs down, so beware!

All our Pressure Treated timber is for Use Class 3

Pressure Treated Bearers

Rotten Untreated Floor Bearers

Our garden rooms are supplied with domestic standard uPVC windows and door frames available in White as standard or Anthracite Grey Wood Effect. So you can either tie in with your home frame colours or customise your office or garden room!

Not all double glazing is the same, and what truly makes our double glazing stand out among the rest is the sealed unit. We supply a 28mm, double glazed sealed unit. These units comprise of 2 panes of 4mm toughened glass on either side of a 20mm aluminium spacer bar, designed to absorb any moisture within the sealed unit, which could lead to condensation inside the glazing. These sealed units comply to BS EN 1279 standards. This EN standard covers the requirements for insulating glass units, including thermal and sound insulation. The sealed units are independently tested to show that they will not suffer from any form of condensation within the unit.

We’ve been manufacturing uPVC windows and doors for over 30 years – so we really know our stuff!

Yes, we recommend a superior quality light coloured ‘Barn’ paint for the exterior, as well as a clear silicone sealer for the joints. These are available from your local DIY shop.

We recommend a flat, level base at least 100mm bigger on each side. e.g. A 4m by 3m building would have a base of 4.2m by 3.2m See more details here. The base can be concrete or made from our RapidGrid Foundation system.

The window can be fitted on either the left or right hand side of the Log Cabin.

This garden room is well insulated, but a small electric or fan heater is a good idea to keep the building warm inside. If you choose to install electrics, speak to an electrician about heating.

A Warmalog® Insulated Log Cabin is a garden building unique to the Log Cabin industry and exclusive to Dunster House. This unique Log Cabin features a 62mm sandwich of slow-grown Spruce timber and Polyisocyanurate insulation, which come together to create a revolutionary type of wall log. Together with roof and floor insulation, this creates a thermally efficient garden building perfect for using all year round. Warmalog® Cabins are insulated in all directions. The floor has a 50mm thick insulated structure, the roof is 60mm (also insulated), coupled with 28mm double glazed sealed units made from toughened glass. Thanks to these and other heat-conscious design details, these Warmalog® cabins have an equivalent U value to 140mm logs, and achieve a U value of 0.69 W/m2K. This means that you can feel confident your cabin will remain cool in the warm months and warm in the cool months.

The walls of this Garden Building are 62mm Insulated Log (equivalent to 140mm thick U-Value).

U-values tell us about the heat loss properties of the material you are measuring. The lower the number, the better insulated the Garden Building will be. Find out more here.

We recommend a flat, level base at least 100mm bigger on each side. e.g. A W4.0m by D3.0m garden building would have a base of 4.2m by 3.2m See more details here.

You do not have to be an expert at DIY to build a Dunster House garden building, as we do provide you with comprehensive pictorial instructions. Also, if you prefer video tutorials, we do have a selection of videos on YouTube which will support you in building your product.

We totally understand that DIY is not for everyone and it can be very overwhelming to start building your own garden product. Therefore, you may want to consider getting in touch with a local carpenter or handyman to install it for you.

If you do take on the challenge to put your garden building together, we are always here to help. Due to the unique design of a Dunster House product, in the vast majority of cases our garden buildings can be installed without the need for planning permission.

However, there are a few other factors to consider:

As all properties are different in size, shape and style we can only advise based on how we have designed our products, not on your property.

When to consider planning permission:

  • If the garden building exceeds over 2.5m tall – the majority of Dunster House buildings do not exceed this.
  • If you intend on putting an outbuilding in front of the main elevation of your property (as it was originally built or as it was on 1st July 1948) will require Planning Permission.
  • If you live in a listed or graded building
  • If you live in a designated area such as areas of outstanding natural beauty, national parks, world heritage sites and conservation areas.
  • If there is a possibility that over 50% of your garden would be taken up by outbuildings.

Click here for more information on Garden Building Planning Permission in the UK.

Still not sure?

If you are still in doubt, we highly recommend getting in contact with your local authority before making a final purchase.

We offer a genuine 10-year guarantee against rot and insect infestation on pressure treated timber, which covers the floor bearers of your product.
