Maintain Your Garden Room

Ensure your garden room lasts the ages by taking the correct measures to maintain it properly.

If the wooden garden room is supplied untreated, then make sure you apply a preservative as soon as it’s built. You will then need to reapply treatment as and when needed. Moisture control is also an important element in maintaining your garden room, to prevent damp inside. Make sure the garden building is well ventilated, and that there is also sufficient drainage.

All Dunster House garden rooms come with pressure treated floor bearers included, to protect the lowest part of the building. Pressure treating is an extensive process that forces treatment deep into the timber while moisture is removed. As a result, it provides high levels of protection. This is why we can offer a genuine 10-year guarantee against rot and insect infestation on pressure treated wood.

Don’t forget, your garden cabin room is made of timber, a natural product that will contract and expand according to the UK’s unpredictable weather. Once the log cabin is erected, there will be a period of “settling” as the wood reacts and adjusts to the surrounding climate. Splits and cracks may occur over time, but that shouldn’t compromise the quality of your garden building. We use interlocking tongue and groove timber in our log cabin garden rooms. This helps with the strength and stability of the walls, as well as the natural expansion and contraction of the timber.

Garden Room Wall Thickness

Our log rooms are available in a range of wall thicknesses, including 45mm and 62mm Insulated (which is equivalent to 140mm U-Value).

U-Values provide a measure of heat loss found within building materials used for walls, floors and the roof. If you intend to use your garden room all year round, rather than seasonally, you should choose as thick a wall as possible, to maximise the insulation.

To allow you to compare options, we quote the U-Values of the walls below.

Our 45mm walls contain over 60% more wood than a 28mm wall and are ideal for use all-year-round. (U-Value 1.93 w/m2 k).

Our 62mm walls are a triple tongue and groove sandwich of timber and insulation. This achieves a U-Value equivalent to 140mm walls. (U-Value 0.59w/m2 K).

Garden Rooms Planning Permission

A Dunster House garden room typically won’t require any planning permission, due to our carefully thought out designs. We have a huge range of outdoor buildings. Although they all feel tall and spacious, most of them are under 2.5m in height. This means you are free to place the building wherever you want in your garden. Thus allowing you to fully maximise the outdoor space you have. Some exceptions may still apply, so check with your local authority if in any doubt.
