What is a Potting Shed?

A potting shed is a sheltered garden building with the main intention of being used for potting plants and sowing seeds while also allowing you to store gardening tools and supplies. As it can feature glazed panels that allow sunlight, this means that a potting shed effectively combines features of both a greenhouse and a shed.

It provides a warm, dry space for gardening tasks as well as offering plant protection for the plants within the shed. The main differences between a potting shed and a greenhouse in terms of plant growth will be for elements like temperature control (wooden walls will naturally retain heat for longer) and light exposure (greenhouses will allow more light in).

But the main benefit a potting shed will have over a greenhouse will be in the extra utility as a storage shed. Potting sheds can store heavier items that a greenhouse may not be able to accommodate as easily.

How to Organise a Potting Shed?

There are lots of ways you can organise a potting shed – making sure you make the maximum use of space makes sure you’ll get the absolute best out of your new wooden potting shed. Here are a few top tips:

• Label everything! It never hurts to make sure you have the name of your tools written on them, especially if you have some help coming from someone else.
• Make sure you have good shelves! Our sheds all come with the choice of an additional shelf to help you organise your potting shed, they can support either 40kg for the half length 570mm version  or 80kg for the full length 1170mm version.
• Sort your pots, keeping yourself organised will make it easier to know what you have to hand and plan for what to grow this season.
• Make use of hanging baskets to help free up some extra space for growing while keeping more of your bench clear.
• Tools stored on racks can free up some much-needed space as well as make to easier to find what you’re looking for.

Should You Insulate A Potting Shed?

This will depend on where you place the shed and how you intend to use it. Potting sheds are designed to catch the sunlight and the wooden wall construction will help them retain heat naturally. However, some plants will have difficulty if the temperature fluctuates too much and if you intend to use the shed all year round, you may need to consider looking into insulation for the plants comfort (and your own!).
